Sunday afternoon best biking buddy Jody and I hit the trail. Leaving Rio Verde, we entered the McDowell Mountain park through the Verde gate, and took the Verde trail up to the dirt road and cut over to the Lousley Hill camping area. There we could pick up the new Escondito trail about a mile east of the Pemberton Trail. The first part was fun, through the huge Saguaro cactus heading east facing four peaks. We stopped to take pictures! The trail turned south after about another mile, and winds through the canyons and washes east of Lousley Hill. That is where it got tougher, more climbing up and down, and the newly cut trail had lots of fist sized loose rocks and loose dirt. Velcro loosening, shock bouncing, and don’t look at that drop-off on the side! Glad to find the end (or beginning if you don’t start in Rio Verde) of the trail at the four peaks staging area. Whew! We bailed out and took the road home. 4 miles of pavement vs. 9 miles of rocks. I hope this trail ages like a fine wine.
